A visit to Leeds Castle begins with a gentle stroll through the Duckery – a peaceful spot, home to many wild ducks, geese and waterfowl and a delightful introduction to the tranquility to follow.
Push through the gate at the far end and you’ll be standing under the branches of a magnificent Cedar Tree – the castle and its moat just visible across the lawn before you. Turn right and the path now leads you through the Wood Garden and along the banks of the River Len until you reach the Pavilion Lawn, the Castle now stands proudly before you.
As you approach the medieval gate tower, don’t forget to have a quick look down into the ruins of the Barbican and Fortified Mill before you cross the cobbled causeway and are finally confronted with the Castle’s magnificent façade. Once inside, you’ll enjoy a tour through the ages – from a medieval queen’s room through the majestic Henry VIII Banqueting Hall with its beautiful ebony floor to the 1920s drawing rooms of Olive, Lady Baillie, the last private owner of the Castle. There are guides in all the rooms, so if you’re curious about anything – just ask – they have a wealth of tales to tell.
